When the Lord Calls

Posted on June 3, 2013 in Devotionals

Are you aware of when the Lord is speaking to you? Would you know if He called your name?  The Lord is always speaking to us, but if we’re not tuned into hearing Him, we’ll miss out on potentially life-changing information.

In the Book of Samuel, it tells the story of Samuel who was trained to be a priest by a man named Eli. One night, Samuel heard someone call his name. He automatically thought it was Eli and came running to where he was.  Eli told him, “I did not call; go back and lie down.”  Samuel returned to his bed when he heard his name called again. Again, Samuel arose and went to Eli thinking Eli had called him.  Eli told him the same thing and sent him back to bed.

The third time Samuel’s name was called, Eli realized that it was the Lord calling Samuel and instructed him the next time he heard his name to say “Speak, your servant is listening.” (1 Samuel 3:10).

How many times have you heard your name called, but it may not have been by the person you thought? Perhaps you just assumed you were “hearing” things.  Listening to God is not always easy, but it comes with great rewards.  God is calling each one of us to do something.  It is up to us to listen and be obedient to His calling. Listening for God also yields great protection.  Sometimes the Lord calls on us to watch our ways, or provides warnings about situations and circumstances. If we are not tuned into to hearing from Him, this could potentially lead to great harm.

If you are having trouble hearing from the Lord, simply pray and ask Him to sharpen your discernment of His voice. He will do it; after all, His world says “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me (John 10:27).  Be ready the next time the Lord calls. He may have a word of wisdom, instruction or protection for you at that very moment.  One word from God can indeed change your life.
